The trial of the Chicago 7, an Adaption

Adaptation of "The trial of the Chicago 7", a film based on Chicago Seven, a group of anti-Vietnam war protestors comprising of Abbie Hoffman, Tom Hayden, David Dellinger, Jerry Rubin, and Rennie Davis, which was charged for crossing state lines with the intention of protesting against the Vietnam war during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Final scene, contains spoilers.

A full courtroom with jurors seat empty. Door opens, enters the defendants.

Another door opens. "All rise", commands the bailiff.

Everyone rises. Enters judge Julius Hoffman.

"69 CR 180, United States of America v. David Dellinger et. al.", said the bailiff.

Everyone takes their seat.

"The law requires that before sentencing, I allow the defendant or defendants to make a statement to the court. I've advised defense counsel that the court will allow one defendant to speak for the group, and I've been advised the group has chosen Mr. Hayden.", said judge Hoffman, "Is that right."

"Yes, sir", replied Tom Hayden while rising up.

"Mr. Hayden, in spite of your actions during the convention, you are the one defendant who has shown, during this trial, respect for this court and for this country, and remorse for those actions. I truly believe... And I mean this, I truly believe that one day you will be a very productive part of our system. I will like you to make your statement brief and without political content of any kind. If you make your statement brief, if you make it respectful, if you make it remorseful and to the point, I will look favorably upon that when administering my sentence", judge Hoffman said.

Jerry Rubin shakes his head in disgust.

"Do you understand what I've said?" continued judge Hoffman, "Mr. Hayden?"

"Yes, sir", Tom replied, "You will look favorably in sentencing."

"Yes," judge Hoffman said.

"If I make my statement respectful and remorseful."

"Yes."

"I'm sorry, Your Honor, what was the third one?"

"Brief."

"If I do these things, my government will look favorably on me."

"You understand?"

"Yes, sir."

"Please begin."

"Okay," Tom continued calmly, "Your Honor, since this trial began, 4,752 US troops have been killed in Vietnam."

The defendants nod their heads.

"Your honor, you asked me to be respectful. With all due respect to them, those 4,752 US troops were not killed, but murdered. Murdered by the US government who sent them to Vietnam to murder Vietnamese men, women, and children."

"Mr. Hayden, please be advised that you are asked to refrain yourself from making your statement political."

"Your honor, you said that if I do what you have asked then my government will look favorably on me."

"Yes, it can still consider that."

"Your honor, when the government didn't look favorably on those 4,752 murdered US troops, every single one of whom stood proudly in support of the government, who were sent by it to Vietnam on a death march in order to further the American imperialism, how can I expect it to look favorably on me who so ardently stand against its oppressive regime?"

"Mr. Hayden, sit down. You shall not continue", said judge Hoffman while banging his gavel.

"Your honor, you asked me to be remorseful. I am sorry that when we marched to Chicago we failed to stop the Vietnam war. I am sorry that we failed to call off the murder of those 4,752 US troops. Your honor, you said that I was the only defendant who showed respect for this court. When I stood for you after what you did to Bobby Seale, who was falsely accused of murdering a police officer, that was a mistake. It was just a reflex, and I didn't mean it. You said that one day I will be very productive part of this system. I will like to make my intentions crystal clear, I have no intention whatsoever to be a part of the system which goes to places and spread death. You asked me to make my statement brief. Your honor, no matter how much I try, I cannot make my statement briefer than the lives of those 4,752 US troops that were made brief by our government. And the following... are their names."

Tom takes a notebook from Rennie Davis and started reading names.

"Private First Class Dennis Walter Kipp," Tom continued, "18 years brief."

Defendants stands up in respect.

"Private Eric Alan Bosch," Tom continued, "21 years brief".

Judge Hoffman bangs garvel.

"Lance Corporal Robert Earl Ellis," Tom continued, "19 years brief."

Jerry Rubin did a raised fist salute.

"You will not read 5,000 names for the record," shouted judge Hoffman.

"Robert Ford," continued Tom, "21 years brief."

Defense counsel stands up.

"There will be order," shouted judge Hoffman.

"Staff sergeant David Cruz Chavez," Tom continued, "31 years brief."

Spectators rises. Members of Black Panther Party did a raised fist salute. Spectators started applauding.

"There will be order," shouted judge Hoffman while banging gravel.

"Corporal Philip Lawrence," Tom continued, "20 years brief."

"He will not read 4,500 names," shouted judge Hoffman.

"Sergeant Brian John Morrow," Tom continued, "19 years brief."

Nationalists starts leaving the courtroom.

Junior prosecuting counsel Richard Schultz stands up.

"What are you doing?" demanded senior prosecuting counsel Tom Foran.

"Respect for the fallen. Let's show 'em some respect, sir," replied Richard.

Tom Foran stands up and leaves the courtroom.

Human Language Processing and Understanding

I recently submitted my Master's thesis on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning which hopefully will earn me my Master's in Computer Science with Speech and Language Processing from the University of Sheffield, UK.

One and a half years back I decided to pursue a research career in Computational Linguistic which is an emerging interdisciplinary sub-field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) because I believe that the key in the rise of the machine is its ability to understand human natural language.

A year back, after I landed in Manchester Airport I was greeted by the University ambassador who was going to accompany me to the University in a taxi arranged by the University. Once we left the airport for the University, the university ambassador, who was a white British male (most probably Christian), asked the taxi driver, a brown Muslim male, about his country of origin. The taxi driver replied that he is from Pakistan. They started discussing different kinds of stuff, Brexit, religions, politics, etc.. I, being an introvert, was quietly listening to them. (This is the benefit of being an introvert, you listen more, speak less (if not at all), and process the conversation the most). The topic of the discussion shifted to the rise in racism in the UK. This is when the taxi driver spoke the wisest words. He said that he believes that people hate each other because they don't understand each other which is primarily because of the lack of conversation due to their inability in understanding each other's language. This is when I realized that Computational Linguistic, through Machine Translation (MT), has an important role to play in the world peace.

It is really important for us to come out of our shell, travel the world, meet new people, understand their way of life. This way, our hatred for others will lessen, and we will contribute to the world peace. And of course, Computational Linguistic has to and will play an important part in this.

The Sin of Melanin

Why is the fact, that,
the color of our skin is black,
the only reason behind the fact,
that even the basic rights we lack?

It started not very long back,
when our ancestors were considered human slaves,
who were treated and traded like mere commodities,
from their very birth to the time when they finally rested in their graves.

And as the time passed,
the world saw many social and scientific progress,
but it didn't meant much to us,
as it played zero role in ending our distress.

And even as slavery and slave trade,
were being abolished in many nations,
we were still being denied our rightful dignity,
as our oppression took the form of racial segregation.

We were not allowed to study in the same school,
or even drink from the same water fountain,
as if we were some kind dangerous creatures,
and of our existence this was a great bane.

Over the period of time, racial segregation too got outlawed,
but for us this too didn't made any difference,
as the ever rising incidents of racial injustice and violence,
among us created an atmosphere of great fear and tense.

For no reason whatsoever, we are being shot dead,
even by those who, by the law, are required to protect us,
and if against this we protest and take a knee,
we get called anti-nationals and treacherous.

It's not as if there haven't been any contribution,
from our daughters and sons,
in the advancement of humankind,
just take the example of mathematician Katherine Johnson.

From the contribution in poetry by Langston Hughes,
to that in rocket science by Annie Easley,
throughout the history, our contribution has been huge,
if you just Google, you will find that fact very easily.

But against our myriad oppression,
our contribution should not be the case,
as injustice to anyone, no matter what,
is a tight slap in the justice's face.

It is high time for us,
to end racism for ever,
and create a world,
where injustice takes place never.

You always better remember that we,
will no longer take this injustice as it is not a sin,
to be born with a skin,
that, in contrast with you, contains more melanin.

Let The Justice Be

I dream of a world, which,
I'm sure one day I'll be able to see,
a world where no one will be a slave,
and everyone will be free.

Where to safeguard oneself from persecution,
from one's country no one will have to flee,
and if somehow one does not receive justice,
one will be able to freely protest against it, and take a knee.

Where there will be equality among people,
and she will be equal to he,
and where there won't be any gender based violence,
and none will be able to grab anyone by their pussy.

Where pain and dolour,
no one will have to dree,
and where everyone's life will be full of happiness,
and their face will be lit up with glee.

Where no one will be homeless,
and to sleep everyone will have a lee,
and where no one will be hungry,
and there will be enough food for everyone, even for you and me.

Where, in slaughterhouses, animals won't get their throats slit,
and rather will roam freely in a lea,
and where climate change will be a history,
and the cities will be filled with trees.

And in order to make this dream a reality,
to the people it is my humble plea,
try to live in harmony with each other,
and for everyone, let the peace and justice be.

The Marital Rape

Why is it so hard for you to take her consent,
Is your wife, in order to please you, just a cunt sent?
Why do you force yourself on her despite the fact that you know,
That being your wife she is not bound to please you, her no is a no.

You don't own your wife because of your marriage,
Marriage is a relationship and not a cage,
Being a person not being abused is her right,
Be her partner, and not the reason of her plight.

Coitus should be consensual,
It is not a way to establish your supremacy, a duel,
There is no place for force in love making,
Even if you are her husband or a king.

Non-consensual coitus with your wife is a marital rape,
Quit laughing, what I just said is not a jape,
Marital rape is a grievous crime,
You remember this when you try to force yourself on her the next and every other time.

The God Of Gore

Brown soil turned red,
with the blood of animals murdered,
but not a single tear was shed,
while thousands were being butchered.

They were ready to kill without a sigh,
for a creature who they believe lives in the sky,
neither the sight of blood nor the sound of cry,
made those people murder shy.

How can someone be so keen,
to take innocent animal's lives,
slashing their throats with knives,
for someone whom they have never seen.

Doesn't it seems odd,
that these men of God,
instead of standing unified for something good,
holding knives against the animals they always stood.

Their innocent victims prayed and prayed,
but neither them nor their God really cared,
and by the death of the day,
from the face of the Earth they were wiped away.

They call their God the agent of peace,
but from harming the animals they never cease,
for in reality these very Gods, mine as well as yours,
are nothing but a facilitator of gore.

A Poem Of Endearment On The Occasion Of Engagement

Here's a couple of lines of endearment,
on the occasion of my dear friend's engagement,
wishing the new couple a lifelong of togetherness,
a journey filled with much love and happiness.

You both are fortunate to have each other,
believe me, for what I said is true,
as in this world, more perfect couple than you two,
are not more than a handful few.

We wish that together you both shine like the sun,
and may together you both have great fun,
may you both always have the support of each other,
and after the engagement, my friend, don't forget you brothers.

A Woman In The Land Of Goddess

I am a woman in the land of Goddess,
where I get slut-shamed for my short dress,
where I am only as good as my intact hymen,
because I am just a sexual object for men,
where I become dirty because of my flowing blood,
as if my blood is not blood, but mud,
where I am objectified in myriad ways,
and where I'm not safe from dehumanizing male gaze,
where every time I go out I am cat-called,
"Why a resting bitch face, smile!", people growl,
where if I hangout with men I am a whore,
and if not, I have friend-zoned them, I am bore,
where for the same job as my male counterparts I am less paid,
and for deserved promotions, people think that I get or will get laid,
where being a woman I cannot have a say,
because women are not intelligent, are they?
where on my body everyone have right but me,
because I am a she, and not a he,
and where whoever I am, and whatever I do,
I become an object of condemnation, a ho.

And if I dare speak against this, I bet,
in no time I will receive rape threats,
but against this I won't remain silent,
on changing the narrative, I am hell bent,
I am equal to you, and not a lesser being,
in a condescending way, you stop me seeing,
I'll do whatever it takes to end this mess,
for I am a womyn in the land of Goddess.

English Translation:
The poor, the hut-dwellers, and the villagers are dying,
why are the nationalists tight-lipped?

The politicians promised of the heaven on Earth,
why are those liars doing genocide, and giving them hell?

They are always in the prayers of the poor,
why are the omnipresent, kind to the poor Gods then missing?

In front of those whom the tyrannized pleaded for mercy,
why are they all turning out to be a tyrant?

Neither the Gods, nor the politicians, or the nationalists came, oh Hasrat,
the ones with the broken boats then saved them from the vortex of death.

The Dark Lord

I am the lord of the darkness,
I thrive in the dark, cold, and foggy nights,
I am scared, to death, of people,
their love, light, and warmth gives me a fright,
as it's not the animals,
but the people who actually bites,
on a peaceful world,
they are stain, a woe, a blight.

Unlike them, I might be dull, and not bright,
black, and not white,
full of darkness, and not light,
just a wight, and not a knight,
but I know what's wrong and right,
and I go out during those dark, cold, and foggy nights,
that time of the day which is devoid of light,
the time which makes even the Bellona's bridegroom shake with fright,
and relieve people and animals from their plights.

Ask Not About Me

Ask not about me, my name,
but about my dreams, my aim,
the things, that keep me awake,
during the night, and beyond the daybreak,
for I am mortal, bound to die,
a decaying corpse, beneath the sky,
but my dreams are immortal,
living for eternity, outliving all,
for I may neither be of any worth,
nor be able to justify my birth,
but every thing on the face of the Earth,
will be revolutionized when my dreams will take birth.

A Letter To Physics

Dear Physics, thou art so wild and free,
this is the reason why I love thee,
but as far as I can foresee,
in return thou will never love me.

With thee, I want to find synergy,
so that we can create free energy,
so that we can enlighten the world,
even though it sounds totally absurd.

With thee, I want to travel physical time and space,
so that I can rhyme about thy gorgeous face,
and write about the physical theories and laws,
which will make people regard thee with awe.

With thee, I want to terraform,
the moon, into a dorm,
so that the homeless will have a place to stay,
and to be far from the harm's way.

I want thou to be my wife,
so that together we can create the elixir of life,
with which, a long and healthy life, we can own,
in addition to the gold from the philosopher's stone.

Although, for it, there is not much scope,
but still, I have really high hopes,
that someday, together we will be,
much love, Dr. Mercury.

When The Lights Turn Red

When the lights turn red,
traffic comes to a halt,
but they begin to earn,
their peanut butter and bread.

A group of young girls, all maybe fourteen,
who, like others, were destined to be queens,
were deceived and sold into prostitution,
where their bodies are daily put up for auction.

At the signal, they showcase their flesh,
to lure clients, from whom they earn cash,
with which they will buy their independence,
from selling their very bodies for a few pence.

A group of trans-persons,
whom the society shun,
who are as much a person as you and I,
but are still hated, I fail to understand why.

At the signal, they extend their rough palms,
hoping that the people, who deny them jobs, will see,
beyond their gender, and have some mercy,
so that they can feed their hungry selves with the alms.

A group of homeless,
living in a terrible mess,
forced into beggary,
by their callous destiny.

At the signal, despite feeling reluctant,
to go forward to people and entreat,
they beg, because otherwise they can't,
get their embarrassed selves something to eat.

A group of street hawkers,
passes through the gawkers,
in extreme cold, rain, and sun,
with their daughters and sons.

At the signal, they try to sell,
the things the people may not need,
like hair gel, bell, and cell,
so, their tired selves, they can feed.

Let us not be deficient in propriety,
and create a communist society,
where every single person is well fed,
whether or not the lights have turned red.

The Intersection Between Sexism And Speciesism

Last winter, we were doing a Vegan outreach near Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. We were speaking about Veganism, and distributing leaflets to the passersby. We are against leafleting because of environmental reasons, and giveaway the leaflets only to the people who looks interested/asks for them. A group of teenagers where passing by. A girl in the group stopped by, and asked us for a leaflet. We gave one to her. After receiving the leaflet she went forward to join her group. One of her male friend snatched the leaflet from her hand, tore it into pieces, and threw the pieces on the road. He said something to her in an angry tone which was inaudible. The girl turned to look at us, she was embarrassed. I was furious at the boy for tearing the leaflet and wasting resources. He could have easily returned the leaflet instead of wasting it.
Little did I know then that it was more concerning than merely the wastage of resources. Yesternight, while reading a study on how womyn are stigmatized for being Vegan, I realized that it was underlying sexism at play. It is a well known fact that Vegans are stigmatized by malzoans for being Vegan, but unfortunately, womyn are more stigmatized than their male counterparts. This is mainly because of the sexist belief that womyn cannot choose for themselves, and that their male counterparts have control over them.

Speciesism is as bad as sexism, because non-humyn animals, the victims of speciesism, are considered as the property of the speciesists, the humyn, just like womyn, the victims of sexism, are considered as the property of the sexists, the men. There is clearly an intersection between both kind of oppression. For more understanding on the issue, one can read "The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory" by Carol J. Adams

Noise Of Silence

No matter how much, in our defense, we raise our voice,
our silence on oppression, will still have a higher noise,
as it fails to address,
the plight of beings whom we oppress.

Of their oppression,
not a word has been spoken,
as it would have woken,
our sleeping conscience.

Why are we so afraid and shy,
of talking about the pain and the cries,
of the beings whom we oppress days and nights,
about whose suffering we are so criminally quite.

Why are we failing to understand,
that with every passing moment of our silence,
on them, we are only furthering the violence,
which they are unable to stand.

Why are we too timid to say,
that because of oppression, every life lost,
has an inherently high cost,
which we will be unable to pay.

Why are we failing to apprehend,
that every silence,
has a noise,
which we won't be able to stand.

Bachpan

Utopia

We are working to make a better world,
in reality, and not just in word,
where suffering, hatred, and crime,
will only occur ,in our prose and rhyme,
where all the wars of the world will cease,
and the world will witness an eternal peace,
where the world will not be broken up, into narrow domestic walls,
and where we will embrace, with an open heart, one and all,
where no two or more person will indulge in a fight,
and no one will be the reason ,for other's fright,
where no one will be jealous or full of spite,
and none will deprive others, of their right,
where discrimination based on gender, race, and caste,
will no longer last,
where the world will have enough bread,
so that everyone can go to bed, well fed,
where every person will have a bed to sleep,
and shoulders of loved ones ,to rest and weep,
where there will be enough books for everyone, so that every head,
will not only be well-traveled, but also be well-read,
where people will have enough resources to meet their genuine need,
and not their illegitimate greed,
where the word 'compassion',
will no longer be just a lexicon,
where we will work for the well-being of aught,
for every animal, humans or not,
where we will take all necessary  measure,
to protect the animals .who are harmed for our pleasure,
where we will make sure,
that every ailment is cured,
where not only the justice shall,
be delivered to one and all,
but also the steps will be taken,
so that no injustice ever happens,
where we will prevent environment from destruction,
and save species from extinction,
where with the help of technology and science,
we will live with modern convenience,
where every person will take part,
not only in sports, but also in art,
where millions of miles we will travel,
and  unearth all the universal marvels,
and where we will witness  birth of  light,
in the darkest hour of the night.

Couplets

During the time of global distress,
when the whole world is in a mess,
some wish for death, some pray for help,
while some themselves becomes a help. (29th June, 2015)

Life is hard, cruel, and long,
celebrate it with poetry, music, and song. (28th June, 2015)

I live to sing, dance, and write,
and to put an end to the bloody fight. (27th June, 2015)

Seeing the illogical statements non-Vegans make,
in defense of their use of leather, dairy and steak,
I am unable to decide whether to laugh or to cry,
or to jump off the cliff out of shame, and die. (21st June, 2015)

Spread the music of violin,
not the scream of violence. (26th May, 2015)

Nuptial bond should not be a bondage,
it should not be forced on people who are underage,
non-consensual marriage is nothing but a cage,
please end child-marriage. (25th May, 2015)

I see killing and suffering every where,
and find that for others no one really cares,
let's end this apathy for once and forever,
so that in this world no one has to suffer ever. (23rd May, 2015)

I dream of a world where there won't be any troubled times,
so that everyone can be happy, and can sing, dance, and rhyme,
where people won't just look forward to survive,
but where they will pursue their dreams, and thrive. (22nd May, 2015)

Non-human animals too are afraid of death,
