Human Language Processing and Understanding

I recently submitted my Master's thesis on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning which hopefully will earn me my Master's in Computer Science with Speech and Language Processing from the University of Sheffield, UK.

One and a half years back I decided to pursue a research career in Computational Linguistic which is an emerging interdisciplinary sub-field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) because I believe that the key in the rise of the machine is its ability to understand human natural language.

A year back, after I landed in Manchester Airport I was greeted by the University ambassador who was going to accompany me to the University in a taxi arranged by the University. Once we left the airport for the University, the university ambassador, who was a white British male (most probably Christian), asked the taxi driver, a brown Muslim male, about his country of origin. The taxi driver replied that he is from Pakistan. They started discussing different kinds of stuff, Brexit, religions, politics, etc.. I, being an introvert, was quietly listening to them. (This is the benefit of being an introvert, you listen more, speak less (if not at all), and process the conversation the most). The topic of the discussion shifted to the rise in racism in the UK. This is when the taxi driver spoke the wisest words. He said that he believes that people hate each other because they don't understand each other which is primarily because of the lack of conversation due to their inability in understanding each other's language. This is when I realized that Computational Linguistic, through Machine Translation (MT), has an important role to play in the world peace.

It is really important for us to come out of our shell, travel the world, meet new people, understand their way of life. This way, our hatred for others will lessen, and we will contribute to the world peace. And of course, Computational Linguistic has to and will play an important part in this.

The Sin of Melanin

Why is the fact, that,
the color of our skin is black,
the only reason behind the fact,
that even the basic rights we lack?

It started not very long back,
when our ancestors were considered human slaves,
who were treated and traded like mere commodities,
from their very birth to the time when they finally rested in their graves.

And as the time passed,
the world saw many social and scientific progress,
but it didn't meant much to us,
as it played zero role in ending our distress.

And even as slavery and slave trade,
were being abolished in many nations,
we were still being denied our rightful dignity,
as our oppression took the form of racial segregation.

We were not allowed to study in the same school,
or even drink from the same water fountain,
as if we were some kind dangerous creatures,
and of our existence this was a great bane.

Over the period of time, racial segregation too got outlawed,
but for us this too didn't made any difference,
as the ever rising incidents of racial injustice and violence,
among us created an atmosphere of great fear and tense.

For no reason whatsoever, we are being shot dead,
even by those who, by the law, are required to protect us,
and if against this we protest and take a knee,
we get called anti-nationals and treacherous.

It's not as if there haven't been any contribution,
from our daughters and sons,
in the advancement of humankind,
just take the example of mathematician Katherine Johnson.

From the contribution in poetry by Langston Hughes,
to that in rocket science by Annie Easley,
throughout the history, our contribution has been huge,
if you just Google, you will find that fact very easily.

But against our myriad oppression,
our contribution should not be the case,
as injustice to anyone, no matter what,
is a tight slap in the justice's face.

It is high time for us,
to end racism for ever,
and create a world,
where injustice takes place never.

You always better remember that we,
will no longer take this injustice as it is not a sin,
to be born with a skin,
that, in contrast with you, contains more melanin.

Let The Justice Be

I dream of a world, which,
I'm sure one day I'll be able to see,
a world where no one will be a slave,
and everyone will be free.

Where to safeguard oneself from persecution,
from one's country no one will have to flee,
and if somehow one does not receive justice,
one will be able to freely protest against it, and take a knee.

Where there will be equality among people,
and she will be equal to he,
and where there won't be any gender based violence,
and none will be able to grab anyone by their pussy.

Where pain and dolour,
no one will have to dree,
and where everyone's life will be full of happiness,
and their face will be lit up with glee.

Where no one will be homeless,
and to sleep everyone will have a lee,
and where no one will be hungry,
and there will be enough food for everyone, even for you and me.

Where, in slaughterhouses, animals won't get their throats slit,
and rather will roam freely in a lea,
and where climate change will be a history,
and the cities will be filled with trees.

And in order to make this dream a reality,
to the people it is my humble plea,
try to live in harmony with each other,
and for everyone, let the peace and justice be.

The Marital Rape

Why is it so hard for you to take her consent,
Is your wife, in order to please you, just a cunt sent?
Why do you force yourself on her despite the fact that you know,
That being your wife she is not bound to please you, her no is a no.

You don't own your wife because of your marriage,
Marriage is a relationship and not a cage,
Being a person not being abused is her right,
Be her partner, and not the reason of her plight.

Coitus should be consensual,
It is not a way to establish your supremacy, a duel,
There is no place for force in love making,
Even if you are her husband or a king.

Non-consensual coitus with your wife is a marital rape,
Quit laughing, what I just said is not a jape,
Marital rape is a grievous crime,
You remember this when you try to force yourself on her the next and every other time.

When The Lights Turn Red

When the lights turn red,
traffic comes to a halt,
but they begin to earn,
their peanut butter and bread.

A group of young girls, all maybe fourteen,
who, like others, were destined to be queens,
were deceived and sold into prostitution,
where their bodies are daily put up for auction.

At the signal, they showcase their flesh,
to lure clients, from whom they earn cash,
with which they will buy their independence,
from selling their very bodies for a few pence.

A group of trans-persons,
whom the society shun,
who are as much a person as you and I,
but are still hated, I fail to understand why.

At the signal, they extend their rough palms,
hoping that the people, who deny them jobs, will see,
beyond their gender, and have some mercy,
so that they can feed their hungry selves with the alms.

A group of homeless,
living in a terrible mess,
forced into beggary,
by their callous destiny.

At the signal, despite feeling reluctant,
to go forward to people and entreat,
they beg, because otherwise they can't,
get their embarrassed selves something to eat.

A group of street hawkers,
passes through the gawkers,
in extreme cold, rain, and sun,
with their daughters and sons.

At the signal, they try to sell,
the things the people may not need,
like hair gel, bell, and cell,
so, their tired selves, they can feed.

Let us not be deficient in propriety,
and create a communist society,
where every single person is well fed,
whether or not the lights have turned red.

The Intersection Between Sexism And Speciesism

Last winter, we were doing a Vegan outreach near Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. We were speaking about Veganism, and distributing leaflets to the passersby. We are against leafleting because of environmental reasons, and giveaway the leaflets only to the people who looks interested/asks for them. A group of teenagers where passing by. A girl in the group stopped by, and asked us for a leaflet. We gave one to her. After receiving the leaflet she went forward to join her group. One of her male friend snatched the leaflet from her hand, tore it into pieces, and threw the pieces on the road. He said something to her in an angry tone which was inaudible. The girl turned to look at us, she was embarrassed. I was furious at the boy for tearing the leaflet and wasting resources. He could have easily returned the leaflet instead of wasting it.
Little did I know then that it was more concerning than merely the wastage of resources. Yesternight, while reading a study on how womyn are stigmatized for being Vegan, I realized that it was underlying sexism at play. It is a well known fact that Vegans are stigmatized by malzoans for being Vegan, but unfortunately, womyn are more stigmatized than their male counterparts. This is mainly because of the sexist belief that womyn cannot choose for themselves, and that their male counterparts have control over them.

Speciesism is as bad as sexism, because non-humyn animals, the victims of speciesism, are considered as the property of the speciesists, the humyn, just like womyn, the victims of sexism, are considered as the property of the sexists, the men. There is clearly an intersection between both kind of oppression. For more understanding on the issue, one can read "The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory" by Carol J. Adams

Noise Of Silence

No matter how much, in our defense, we raise our voice,
our silence on oppression, will still have a higher noise,
as it fails to address,
the plight of beings whom we oppress.

Of their oppression,
not a word has been spoken,
as it would have woken,
our sleeping conscience.

Why are we so afraid and shy,
of talking about the pain and the cries,
of the beings whom we oppress days and nights,
about whose suffering we are so criminally quite.

Why are we failing to understand,
that with every passing moment of our silence,
on them, we are only furthering the violence,
which they are unable to stand.

Why are we too timid to say,
that because of oppression, every life lost,
has an inherently high cost,
which we will be unable to pay.

Why are we failing to apprehend,
that every silence,
has a noise,
which we won't be able to stand.

Utopia

We are working to make a better world,
in reality, and not just in word,
where suffering, hatred, and crime,
will only occur ,in our prose and rhyme,
where all the wars of the world will cease,
and the world will witness an eternal peace,
where the world will not be broken up, into narrow domestic walls,
and where we will embrace, with an open heart, one and all,
where no two or more person will indulge in a fight,
and no one will be the reason ,for other's fright,
where no one will be jealous or full of spite,
and none will deprive others, of their right,
where discrimination based on gender, race, and caste,
will no longer last,
where the world will have enough bread,
so that everyone can go to bed, well fed,
where every person will have a bed to sleep,
and shoulders of loved ones ,to rest and weep,
where there will be enough books for everyone, so that every head,
will not only be well-traveled, but also be well-read,
where people will have enough resources to meet their genuine need,
and not their illegitimate greed,
where the word 'compassion',
will no longer be just a lexicon,
where we will work for the well-being of aught,
for every animal, humans or not,
where we will take all necessary  measure,
to protect the animals .who are harmed for our pleasure,
where we will make sure,
that every ailment is cured,
where not only the justice shall,
be delivered to one and all,
but also the steps will be taken,
so that no injustice ever happens,
where we will prevent environment from destruction,
and save species from extinction,
where with the help of technology and science,
we will live with modern convenience,
where every person will take part,
not only in sports, but also in art,
where millions of miles we will travel,
and  unearth all the universal marvels,
and where we will witness  birth of  light,
in the darkest hour of the night.

Mother

Oh mother, I can't tell thee how happy I am for thou,
as however in pain thou may be, thine condition is thousand fold better than that of a cow,
who in India is considered to be the holy mother,
but whose condition is not even a slightest better than that of an insect living in a gutter.

Thou must be thankful to thy luck,
that on the day of thy baby's birth, from thou he wasn't plucked,
and kept in a small crate till he is few weeks old and killed for veal,
without even thinking for a second that how woeful thou may feel.

While to give the most exclusive food to her child, mothers all around the world strive,
a mother cow, with sad eyes sees that her calves art from their own mother's milk being deprived,
so that her human counterpart can feed their lust on the milk that's not morally theirs,
which verily is not at all just or fair.

Today, while the mothers all around the world art being treated with respect,
their non-human counterparts art being treated merely as an object,
who art made to give birth just to fulfill their greed,
and at the death of the day, when they art no more useful, they art made to bleed.

People today art commemorating their own mother,
while ill-treating every other,
by consuming the flesh, skin and the milk that was not their own,
but of a mother's issue, who art in pain letting out a long, deep moan.

Meat, dairy, egg and animal skin,
which tears apart a mother from her kin,
art an insult to motherhood,
and to stop it, I will do all that I should.

In order to show my respect to thou,
I today take a solemn vow,
to free from cage every mother,
mine as well as other's.

To thou, oh lady and sire, I maketh an appeal,
that from a mother do naught steal,
her issue who art her only treasure,
merely for the sake of a moment's pleasure.

To all those who speaketh that I shouldst respect mother,
only mine's and naught other's,
I speaketh that a mother is a mother, thine as well as mine,
as well as of a bovine, canine, feline or a swine.

Oh mother, the world speaketh that I should celebrate how thou is related to me,
as if in this world, that is the only importance of thee,
but I think that we should celebrate the kind on person thou art,
and how in the betterment of this world thou plays a significant part.

The Men In The Mask

Two men in uniform came by to ask,
about the whereabouts of men in the mask,
whom I know very well,
as they live not far from where I dwell.

They said that they are men of terror,
which to me seemed to be full of error,
as I know them to be compassionate men,
who have risked their lives to save many cows, dogs and hen.

They said that they are the chief,
of a group of vandals and thieves,
who break their ways into slaughterhouses and fur-farms,
in order to liberate animals from the jaws of harm.

They free the animals marked for death from their cages,
which cause business owner millions in damage,
which is considered to be a great crime,
as in this world instead of lives money is considered to be prime.

These men who are animal carer,
who works for the well-being of others,
of whose suffering nobody bothers,
are being termed as men of terror.

These men who fill you with awe,
are facing terror charge,
and are wanted by the law,
but are still at large.

They will finally be apprehended,
and will be wrongfully prosecuted,
and consequently be executed,
for protecting those who are not to be protected.

The law is illegally controlled by the businesses,
which use it as according to their selfishness,
and alter them as and when they please,
keeping law enforcement on a leash.

We live in such a dreadful time,
where compassion is considered to be an unpardonable crime,
where we prosecute those who liberate innocent lives,
on the back of whose suffering we illegitimately thrive.

Are We Free

Are we free when we make others a slave,
or for their suffering when we crave,
or for them when we dig-up a grave,
or when we are tyrant's fave?

We are free,
only when we are able to see,
that when we enslave other,
we are as a salve as t'other.

We are free,
only when we able to make others flee,
the center of their atrocity,
and safeguard them from other's ferocity.

We are free,
only when we are able to be,
a better person,
and stop making other's plight worsen.

We are free,
only when we stop justifying the,
wrong doings of ours,
that inflict wounds leaving scars.

Unchain The Female Bovine

Many people have told me that it is Okay to rape and sexually abuse/exploit a female bovine because in return we take "care" of them (i.e. bathe them, groom them, feed them, etc.). It is a matter of common sense that non-human animals can and have taken care of themselves very well, and they do not require any human assistance for that. It is also evident from the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pobAqWCc8Fo) that they can meet their basic requirements and if they feel thirsty then they can quench their thirst on their own given that the Homo Sapiens haven't chained them in the very first place.

They also say that it is Okay to chain them 24x7 so that they don't "wander off". It is a scientifically proven fact that non-human animals are smart enough to take care of themselves and that they have a great knowledge of direction, even better than we Homo Sapiens. So the point that they will get lost is totally void. By making the point that they will wander-off if they will be unchained, they are also making a subtle point which they themselves are unaware of, and that is that those female bovine do not want to continue being their slaves and be sexually abused/exploited. Further, it is quite evident from the video that they can and do suffer from thirst and hunger as they are chained 24x7 and there aren't anyone to attend their basic needs. (Which wouldn't have been required if they wouldn't have been chained in the very first place). Further, they DO have the right to movement as and when they like to. We cannot strip them from that very basic rights of them.

So let me make it very clear that we are NOT doing them any favor by sexually abusing/exploiting them. So if we are sexually abusing/exploiting them and are consuming dairy/poultry, I expect that we show some integrity and accept the fact that we are doing so only to fulfill the lust of our taste buds. PLEASE do not try to justify it because whatever point we will put forward in its defense will be totally void. It is NOT Okay to perpetuate/deny/defend/justify wrong just because we are not at the receiving end of it. And stop calling non-human animals stupid. It is a scientifically proven fact that they aren't stupid. If we continue to call them stupid, then we are being speciesist and just doing so to make a void point of our human supremacy.

We do not deserve the wrongs we do, go Vegan.

Something To Learn

Someone told me that since I am just 25 years old, I have much to learn. I personally believe that age has no correlation with the need of learning, and even if I would be unfortunate enough to live upto the age of 250, I will still have much to learn. I believe that everyone learn something new with every passing day. (Whether the things one learn is good or not is totally a different issue). And I really hope that what I will learn will be good things and not bad (including, but not limited to, indifference, hatred, speciesism, sexism, racism, perpetuating/denying/defending/justifying others suffering, etc.)

A couple of days back I had the opportunity of learning the fact that the name of a nation/religion/culture/race is more important then the well-being of the members of it. (Since this is not a good thing to learn, I am hopeful that I will unlearn it soon enough). There were people calling for the ban of a documentary just because it was exposing the atrocities the member of that nation/religion/culture/race were/are facing and thus asserting the fact that the name of a nation/religion/culture/race is more important than the well-being of its member. Also, some activists of that nation were offloaded, jailed and called "anti-nationals". It is really interesting to see how the people working for the better environment of a nation can be termed as "anti-nationals".

Now, at the same time, I also had the opportunity to learn about an incident where a nation ended a cruel and violent tradition of pig slaughter festival. The activists of that nation brought the issue to international attention. Did the expose brought a shame to that nation? It might have. But by bringing the issue to international attention, the activists made it sure that the issue is being addressed, and that people of the world will collectively voice for the end of it, which it did. Now it is very important to notice that because of it, the political heads of that nation did what was required to do, and stopped the wrongs instead of stopping the activist from voicing the wrongs, and thus asserting the point the well-being of beings are more important than the shame which is brought to a nation/religion/culture/race by the exposure of its wrong-doing.

I sincerely hope that we will make a world where people will be more concerned about the well-being of others rather than the shame the exposure of the atrocities of others will bring to a nation/religion/culture/race.

One "Fortunate" Day

It was the summer of 2003, I was 13 then, and was travelling to Varanasi by train. There was a Hindu saint/priest in our compartment. I don't know whether he was travelling with a proper ticket or not, most of them are freeloaders anyhow. As the train was heading closer to the destination, many had already deboarded the train. There was very few people left in the coach, and only three people in that compartment. He drew himself closer to me. He put his bhagwa cloth on my lower, and from beneath it, started fondling my penis. I moved from there. Some people will try to assert that that wasn't a sexual abuse, but I am certain that that was a sexual abuse.

I had kept my silence till now. I am fully aware of the fact that being silent about the wrongs is a heinous crime, and I am guilty as charged. Our silence is the biggest weapon that they use against us. But this is not about my plight. My plight is not at all important. It is about the plight of others who have suffered/is suffering similar fate. I don't know whether what happened to me was right or wrong, but what has happened/is happening to other's is definitely wrong. We live in a very grievous world where beings (male/female, human/non-human) are being sexually abused/exploited. And there are people who are trying to perpetuate/deny/defend/justify it as they have the luxury of not being at the receiving end.

I have kept my silence about was done to me, but I'm not going to be silent about the wrongs that is happening to others. I am not against the materialistic luxury of people, but I won't let people have the luxury of perpetuating/denying/defending/justifying wrongs on others just because they are not at the receiving end of it. I'll speak against it and will make sure that one fortunate day they will be stripped off their luxury of perpetuating/denying/defending/justifying wrongs on others just because they are not at the receiving end.

Sexual abuse/exploitation IS sexual abuse/exploitation no matter how much they deny/defend/justify it. And we are all, in one way or the other, guilty of it. If we are consuming dairy/poultry we ARE contributing to sexual abuse/exploitation of others (in this case, non-human females). But you can bring an end to it by going Vegan.

P.S.: There are some people who assert that a sexual abuse/exploitation is not a sexual abuse/exploitation if the victim does not show any psychological disorder. Although I wish that everyone will be safe and no one will have face such fate, but if on some unfortunate day someone gets sexually abused/exploited, ask that being to show psychological disorder, or else the sexual abuse/exploitation won't be considered as sexual abuse/exploitation.

Do I Have A Girlfriend?

I don't know what to reply when people ask me whether I have a girlfriend (singular) or not. What kind of question is that supposed to be? How can one have only one girlfriend (singular) and doesn't everyone have girlfriends (plural) (with the exception of those who live in extremely conservative society)?

Being a man of semantics, I understand the term "girlfriend" as a friend who happens to have XX chromosomal makeup and nothing more than that, but obviously people doesn't mean that and what they mean to ask is that whether I have a girl (a person with XX chromosomal makeup) who is my friend just because she is a girl or, in other words, just because of her chromosomal makeup.

I fail to understand how and when the meaning of the term "girlfriend" changed from "a friend who happens to have XX chromosomal makeup" to "a friend just because of her XX chromosomal makeup" and how chromosomal makeup of a person plays a driving role in making friendship with others. Whatever the meaning of the term "girlfriend" may be, I fail to understand how the very question that whether I have a girlfriend or not is a "soup question" and if ain't a "soup question" then how does that bother that person, and if it doesn't bother that person then what is the pointing of raising such questions?

The Religions Of Peace

What kind of people does this? These Muslims are so brutal, they kill millions of innocent animals mercilessly to appease their God on Eid. First they start with killing innocent animals and then ends with killing "innocent" Homo Sapiens. This is the very reason why I burst fire-crackers on Diwali.

Oh wait, this isn't the picture from Eid but is from Gadhimai Festival. My bad. Carry on Hindus. Jai GadhiMai!!

People say that I should be proud of my Hindu linkage. Seeing the merciless slaughter of innocent animals, I am very "proud" of my Hindu linkage.

Success 200: GOD FOUND

I was skeptical about God/Goddess, claiming his/her non-existence and then some of my theist friends "humbly" asked me to reconsider, saying that God do exist. Complying to their wish, I did some more extensive research, and found that I was never so wrong in my whole life, and that God do exist, and it's just that I was not able to "feel" him.

On a thorough research, I found these God/Goddess, sitting on their gold throne in their heavenly abode, smiling on the agony of poor non-human animals being sacrificed in his/her name, during Eid al-Adha , Gadhimai festival/Durga Festival, Kapparot and/or Matagh.

On the ground covered with blood of innocent creatures, I saw success 200 message: GOD FOUND.

Error 404: God Not Found!

Gaza crisis raised many questions in my mind. I saw some people supporting the crisis just because they hate the religion the victims follow and some people condemning the crisis just because they belong to the same religion the victims belong to, and not because they care for the well-being of the victims otherwise. I even saw people praying for the well-being of the victims, as if praying will lessen the suffering of the victims.

When I was a kid, I heard many stories proclaiming how "just" God/Goddess are, by drowning almost every Earthlings, because the "sons of God" found the "daughters of men" beautiful and decided to marry them, by beheading Shishupala just because he abused the "almighty" a hundred times, and by killing 'Asma' bint Marwan because she ridiculed the "almighty" through her poetry.

Hearing all these stories of how "just" these God/Goddess are and what prompt action they take in order to inhibit wrong-doing, I was much confident that any or all God will come down from their heavenly abode to prevent the Gaza crisis or any other such incidents, which are so grievous in nature, as they took prompt action against "crimes" of minuscule magnitude. But seeing no action at all to prevent such heinous crimes against mankind, I was disappointed and was wondering that what made God/Goddess numb on such an important issue and tried to search (Google) where they were during these times of deadly catastrophes, and then I heard a voice from the cloud (cloud computing) that, "Error 404: God Not Found".

The God Of War

Brown soil turned red,
with the blood of innocents murdered,
but not a single tear was shed,
while thousands were being butchered.

They were ready to kill and get killed without a sigh,
for a creature who they believed lives in the sky,
neither the sight of blood nor the sound of cry,
made those people murder shy.

How can someone be so keen,
to take each others lives,
making widows out of wives,
for someone whom they have never seen.

Doesn't it seems odd,
that these men of God,
instead of standing unified for something good,
holding rage against each other they stood.

Their innocent victims prayed and prayed,
but neither them nor their God really cared,
and by the death of the day,
from the face of the Earth they were wiped away.

They call their God the agent of peace,
but from harming each other they never cease,
for in reality these very Gods, mine as well as yours,
are nothing but a facilitator of wars.
